Heat Pump or Not?

Should I consider a new heating and cooling system with a Heat Pump. Whether it’s ducted heat pumps, mini-splits, or even geothermal systems, there is a lot of discuss about this in the climate-friendly HVAC tech world.

In recent years a great deal of news groups and magazines have pushed the heat pumps’ potential for mitigating climate change. Government and Utility Companies continue to offer rebates and incentives when homeowners purchase a new heating and cooling system with a heat pump. The Department of Energy is also showing support for heat pumps over traditional heating systems. Legislation continues attempt to pass bills to speed up heat pump adoption.

A growing number of Americans say that they would install a heat pump as their next heating system. According to a national survey in June of 2022, 49% said they would consider purchasing a new or replacement unit with a heat pump. There was a 14.6% increase in shipment of heat pumps compared year over year as December 2021.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning feel that in the climate we live in here in the South, a heat pump system can be an effective and cost-saving option when you are ready for a new HVAC system. Since we don’t have long periods of extreme cold weather, a heat pump system can keep you comfortable doing our winter months while saving us money on our winter energy bills.

Who to Call, My AC is making Noises?

Your AC is making strange noises and you are not sure what to do. Or even more importantly who to call. You are probably asking yourself, is the person or company I call qualified? Will they just try and sell me something? Will they stand behind their products and services?

Well, if you asked yourself these questions you are not alone, many people have the same concerns.

Here is what you should know.

The state of Alabama requires all HVAC technicians (heating and cooling technicians) to be licensed to perform heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration services on residential and commercial properties.

These contractors install, repair, and service air conditioning and heating systems. They use mechanical equipment to control humidity and temperature.

People that apply for this license must do the following:

  • Get approval from the Alabama licensing board to take the test.
  • Having been a heating and air conditioning apprentice.
  • Complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of HVAC coursework.
  • Have completed and graduated from an approved Alabama HVAC program.
  • Be 18 years old or older with a high school or GED diploma.

So, as you can see in the State of Alabama, we take it seriously as to authorizing someone to work on commercial and residential HVAC systems.

With this said you simple need to ask these basic questions before allowing anyone to come out (free or not) to give you an estimate to repair your air conditioning unit or to replace it.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning also take this serious, that is why all our expert technicians have gone through the process or are working under a certified license technician. We assure you that we will be thorough in our evaluation of your heating or air conditioning problem. And will give you a fair affordable solution.

Knowing My Central Air Conditioning Unit

Your Air Conditioning Unit is important to maintain, especially when realizing how important it is during these hot Summer months.

Here are a few questions to ask that will help you determine what is ailing your AC. As it turns out, the No. 1 problem affects central AC systems, is the easiest to fix.

1. Dirty Filters A clogged air filter restricts airflow, decreasing efficiency and reducing the unit’s ability to cool the air effectively.  For central AC systems, check the filter manufacturer’s recommendation for when to swap in a new one. An air conditioning filter normal last 3 months However just remember that if your central air system is running constantly or if you have pets, you will need to change your filters more often.

2. Check Your Thermostat It is best to have a programmable thermostat, this makes it easier to control your AC when you are home or when you are out. If the temperature seems off, make sure the thermostat is not exposed to direct sunlight, which may cause it to register the wrong temperature.

3. A Blocked Air Register Make sure nothing is blocking your register. It is important the nothing blocks the airflow. Remove any dust that may have accumulated on the register.

4 Keep Your Outside Compressor Not Crowded. Your compressor needs adequate space around it. Keep any plants or structures at least two feet away from the compressor. Also ensure that trees are not right overhead. There should be a 6-foot clearance between the top of the compressor and the nearest tree.

5. Maintenance Check Ups help. Having your HVAC system checked at least twice a year can help uncover serious issues that may be affecting your system, The technician will check all the moving parts as well as the refrigerant and recharge the system if that is needed.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning hope this information has been beneficial to you.

Why is It So Hot

Did you realize that Summers in Alabama are among the hottest in all of the United States. Average temperatures throughout the Summer average over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. In the extreme southern part of the state, we are fortunate to have the heat tempered slightly by the winds from the Gulf of Mexico, but our humidity however makes the heat appear higher than it really is. In parts of northern Alabama, the elevation above sea level similarly tempers the summer heat. In summer, average afternoon elevated temperatures are especially high in Montgomery and Tuscaloosa (both averaging 92 °F (33 °C) in July and August). The average nighttime humidity is highest in southwest Alabama, which results in the highest average (high plus low temperature) for reporting stations in the state. While afternoon highs in Mobile are slightly cooler than those in Alabama’s inland cities, the warm nights produced by proximity to the Gulf of Mexico results in the average annual temperature for Mobile being the highest in the state.

With all this said, it is important that your HVAC system is working well not only for your comfort and also to protect your health during these recent heat waves.

Having your HVAC cooling system checked in early Spring can help you avoid costly air conditioning repairs in the middle of our hot Summers.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning can help prepare you for the Summer months by preforming a Spring maintenance check of your entire cooling system. This can not only help prepare you for the hot Summers ahead but also avoid the cost factor associated with needing your air conditioner repairs during the busiest season for air conditioning contractors.

Should I Have My Ducts Cleaned

Should I Have My Ducts Cleaned

Duct Cleaning has potential benefits but there are questions to ask before you have this done at your home. Since conditions in every home are different, you cannot generalize to generalize whether air duct cleaning in your home would be beneficial.

Here are some questions to ask yourself before you have this done.

  • Does anyone in your home have allergies or our breathing illnesses?
  • Do you see large amounts of dust or mold on your air conditioning vents?

Seeing dust or debris on your return air register does not indicate that your ducts need cleaning.

You may however decide to have your ducts cleaned because over time the air ducts will get dirty over time and should occasionally be cleaned.

It is important that the technician follows proper procedures when completing the process. Without doing this properly you may create more air pollution.  For example, an inadequate vacuum collection system can release more dust, dirt and other contaminants. A poor cleaning can damage your ducts or heating and cooling system, possibly increasing your heating and air conditioning costs or forcing you to have costly repairs or replacements.

You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if:

  • There is visible mold growth in your ductwork. Sometimes the mold growth may not be visible to your naked eye, the technician needs to show you the mold growth that he finds in your duct system. Also, if your air ducts are insulated the insulation getting wet can create mold. It should be removed and replaced.
  • If you have a rodent or insect problem that has made its way into your duct system.

Just remember that duct cleaning does not actually prevent health problems. There is no evidence that a light amount of household dust or other particulate matter in air ducts poses any risk to health. So, you need to be careful when determining that this procedure is necessary.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not recommend that air ducts be cleaned except as needed, except on an as-needed basis because of the continuing uncertainty about the benefits of duct cleaning.

So, with this said, if you feel that duct cleaning is needed in your home, it is best to talk with a professional duct cleaning company and have them inspect to make this determination. You want to be sure and obtain conclusive evidence that duct cleaning is necessary.

We at Action Heating and Air Conditioning have been serving the Mobile and Baldwin County areas since 1997. We can inspect and make air duct cleaning recommendation if necessary.
